Confused about Pool and Root Dataset

Hello,

when reading in the forum I learned that the root dataset shall not be shared via SMB. However, I am a bit confused about what is the pool and what is the root dataset related to the pool.

On https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/scaleuireference/datasets/ I can find the following:

root_dataset
root_dataset998×610 67.8 KB

Is the first entry in the list (“tank”) the root dataset or the pool? As the heading on the screenshot says “Datasets” I assume it is the root dataset, right?

Does this mean that in this example sharing the child datasets would be fine (“mictest” for example), only the very first entry in the Dataset list on TrueNAS SCALE is not allowed to be shared?

tank is the pool and the root dataset in the case of the above image. Best rule of thumb is never use that and create sub datasets of it.
