Core wont upgrade to 13.0-u6.2 UPDATE

Just tried a manual update to 13.3 stable. Same things. It wont upgrade, still on 13.0-u6.1

ok Running MacOS using webgui.

tried the update method through the gui. tried manual update through the webgui. In both cases the update proceeds, system reboots, and voila still stuck on u6.1.

this is the manual update URL
https://download.freenas.org/13.0/STABLE/latest/TrueNAS-13.0-U6.2-manual-update.tar

I eventually want to migrate to scale which the docs say make sure your own the latest version of core before trying. so trying to upgrade up to 13.3.

Any help would be appreciated.

Was a 13.3 boot environment created ?

ahh no. Let me research that

Well actually a boot environment was created

cleaned up boot env. set to u6.2, activated, reboot, and this is the result

I would delete the 13.3 and 13.0, reboot and try the GUI to go to 13.0-U6.2
If it still fails, then make sure you have a saved config and replace the boot device.

This is the link for the manual update to 13.0-U6.2; unless you are purposefully doing a step by step update, you want the 13.3 one.

I would first try a fresh reinstall.

13.0-U6.2 is a valid jump point to SCALE, no need to go to 13.3

I think there might be either a MacOS or Chrome dependency going on here:

Top line is config save using safari
next line is config save using chrome.

Tried updating through the gui on safari - same results

did a fresh install.

…and?

So here’s what happened

I fresh installed 13.3 onto 2 SSD drives. For whatever reason I could not get the machine to boot. It just sat there at a mount prompt. So i fresh installed onto the single NVME that came with the ix system. That booted. I loaded my saved config file. The system re-booted twice and is back to the previous state prior to the fresh install. You can see my boot pool and the single NVMe drive below

Sort of hijacking my own thread here.

After upgrade core to 13.3, read all the migration caveats about migrating to Scale. My setup is simple and there wasnt anything for me to take care of. so Pushed the update button to 24.02 stable. Acted like it updated but im still on Core. See below. I also manually downloaded the update and applied a manual update, Same result - still on Core 13.3

Here is my boot environment

Is an ISO install my next step? Thats what I had to do when migrating from 13 to 13.3

Something is botched on that boot pool.

@ABain what do you think?

Here are my drives. ada8 and 9 are a raid SSD boot pool. When I did a fresh install of 13.3 I installed to 8 and 9 first. System booted and couldnt find the default boot drive If I recall, I then installed on nvd0 - system booted. I updated the configuration from the saved config file. System booted twice and now it boots from the ada8 and 9.

This explains everything. One of the two drives is likely failing, disconnect one and try again: if things don’t change, do the same thing with the other. You should reinstall without using hardware RAID.

Hardware RAID is not compatibile with ZFS, if you need a HA boot pool please read the following.

ok to be clear Im not using hardware raid. I selected 2 drives during install and assumed that created a mirrored boot pool. Was that a bad assumption? Nevermind - I read the article again.

MIRROR ≠ RAID. You do not use the word RAID in ZFS: it’s either MIRROR or RAIDZ (well, and dRAID for the cool kids).

for what its worth I can boot from either of those SSDs ada8 or ada9. I removed one. did the auto update and was able to boot into scale. Uploaded my Core config file and am missing my pools. The update installed on the nvme drive.

update: Am importing my pools.

You likely need to import them either using the WebUI or the Shell (zpool import).
