Hi All.
I am a relatively new user to TrueNAS.
I updated from Dragonfish 24.04.2.3 to Electrical Eel 24.10.1
The process that I followed was:
Ran install of Electric Eel 24.10.1 ISO
Logged into Electric Eel and restored backup of Dragonfish.
It looks like all my data and config is there, but I am unable to view my datasets.
If I try and acces them, I get the message: “Failed to load datasets ‘path’”
I got the same error attempting to migrate from Core 13.0U6.4 to Scale 24.10.1 by installing a fresh copy of Scale 24.10.1 and then restoring my Core config file.
The restore seemed to work except I get the same “Failed to load datasets error” and any other UI component that lists Datasets or Zvol fails to load also.
Apps and VMs also fail to start.
I attempted this approach after doing a Core to Scale 24.04 to Scale 24.10 failed on the initial Scale 24.04 migration with a Grub rescue error upon the first reboot.
I’m thinking I’m going to have to set up Scale / VMs / Plex all from scratch
I was able to migrate from TrueNAS Core to Scale 24.04 (Legacy) version via downloading that ISO and restoring my TrueNAS Core 13.0U6.4 config and I can view the Dataset page and see my VM configuration. I’m trying an in place upgrade from 24.4 to 24.10 now to see if the Datasets page still works after that.
I noticed doing the Core to 24.04 migration, all my VMs except a Windows one were started, however none of them had ethernet access. They were bound to bond0 which was the lagg I used in Core, however the interface was down and even trying to bring it up, none of the VMs would get an IP. I tried creating a bridge but that failed as it wouldn’t let me unassign the IP from my bond0 interface to reassigned to my new br0 bridge inteface. I had all VMs / Samba /SSH services stopped, but no luck. Hopefully I can fix this once on 24.10 assuming the dataset page is still functional
There must be something bugged in TrueNAS Scale 24.10 when restoring an older version configuration file. The upgrade from 24.04 to 24.10 succeeded and the DataSet page still works. I thought I’d restore the config that I took before doing the in place upgrade, and bang, that page is broken again.
So going TrueNAS Core 13.0U6.4 migrate to TrueNAS Scale 24.04.2.5 via a fresh install and then restore TrueNAS Core config file, and then upgrade to 24.10.1. This meant that I no longer got the “Failed to load datasets ‘path’” error.
The VM issues turned out to be renamed NICs inside the guest operating systems, and a file permissions issue to an ISO for Windows VM.
After upgrading to 24.10.1 I was able to use CMD to setup the bridge on top of my LACP lagg. I was still unable to use the UI as it would not let me unassigned the IP from the lagg, nor would it let me add it to the bridge as it said it was in use. This was even with all network service stopped. 24.04.2.5 would give me the same errors from CMD and UI.
I didn’t manually scrub the USB Hynix SSD from the old 24.10.1 install. I let the installer for 24.04.2.5 just overwrite it, which going by the JIRA ticket above causes this issue
I might attempt a reinstall → restore config at a later date which going by the JIRA ticket is the only fix for this. But for now the system seems to be working and I don’t have any issues rebooting the server, so leaving it for now.
I hope the above helps anyone else trying to migrate / upgrade to 24.10.1
