Error at starting S.M.A.R.T test

Hi everyone,

I just saw that one my pools has an issue (it still works) but I would like to run a smart test and every time I run a smart test I get this error. Any idea? I’ve checked other posts but I found nothing similar to my issue

I came across the following, not sure if this will help but I will leave it here.

https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/1741

Don’t know if change has been made, but i facing same issue on launch smart test from GUI in core.
I resolved with @joeschmuck help here

Oh thank you guys @GreymatterPrison and @oxyde for the amount of knowledge! Will we get a an update of smarttools sooner or later in some truenas versions? It seems odd to me to run a script to perform tests on nvme since I think many users use them nowadays

according to this, should be on EEL already (or soon)

I am on EE RC2 and I have this issue haha. I hope they will update it with the release (but I think it won’t at this point)

Still RC2 prob will come with the stable release!

Truenas 24.04 and later already has smartmontools 7.4, however the GUI does not support scheduled nvme testing. EE does have the scheduling as i recall. I’m on travel now, can’t check.

@joeschmuck Please let us know when you have some time

What can I do for you?

Thanks for your time  will nvme smart testing be supported in the final release of Electric Eel?

I am pretty sure it is supported in EE RC2 now. If for some reason EE fails to support it, you still have Multi Report script that will do it for you.

Thanks for the multi report script that you developed and it works great! Though, I think that it is like a missing feature of truenas at the moment, I mean it is that kind of feature that I would expect truenas to be implemented internally. Personal opinions aside, at the moment, whenever I run a smart test for nvme drives I get this error:
https://forums.truenas.com/t/error-at-starting-s-m-a-r-t-test/15585?u=amigo3271
Should I report it as bug in your opinion? (Because I am already on E.E RC2)

If you get that error when running a SMARzt test via the GUI, yes, a bug report. If it is only for Multi Report, then i need to know. I will be home in a few days and boredom will set in. I can look into this more.

Ok I will report a bug for it. Related to multi_report I have also another issue at the moment where boot-pool is shown as exported (I opened another topic here for it problem with boot pool Boot-pool issue) and today when I started multi report for the first time, I got errors in the truenas logs and I had to restart the server because it froze, so I think it is not strictly an issue with multi_report but more a combination of the two issues. Could you please have a look into the topic I opened when you have some time? Thanks a bunch

I have filed another bug report for the nvme invalid field in command message and provided what I hope to be the smoking gun in the truenas code. The past bug reports were closed siting that smartmontools was the problem, but I don’t believe that as all for version 7.4. I hope this is actually the fix and I’m very willing to test it out. Hum, I wonder if I could compile my own version of TrueNAS to test it out.

I’ve added your multi_report script as a cronjob and it works like a charm now
Still same issue for EE RC2 though  I’ve just opened a bug for it:

Glad you like it. Another version will come out in a few months, or sooner. I’m still working the API angle. Also smartmontools 7.5 will fix many of the nvme issues, possibly all that we care about at least.
