Hi there! I’ve been running TrueNAS for many years, and I try to stay on top keeping my systems up to date. I’m currently running TrueNAS Community 25.04.2.1, and I’ve noticed a potential problem recently. Over the last few months, I’ve noticed many times every non-custom app I that have running (I have about 10 currently) all require an update all at once. I’ve been trying to keep them updated, but there have been multiple instances where I’ll push the pending updates, and then in the next day or so they all have more pending updates again. The latest example was today… every app reports that there are pending updates.
So… my questions are as follows:
Is it normal to see all apps requiring updates all at once? I ask this because I’m used to seeing the number of apps that require updates increase progressively over time rather than all apps at once.
Is it normal to have to update all apps multiple times within a short period (eg. multiple updates within 1-3 days)?
None of the apps have ever reported anything other than “No Changelog” in the UI. Is this normal/expected?
Where can I track down the reasoning behind these app updates?
This stuff is why you shouldn’t use the community apps. No one knows what’s going on in them, they never ever ever put anything in the changelog, and the updates sometimes even break things with no warning.
Just install Dockge and install your apps in there with plain docker-compose yaml, so you don’t have to deal with this nonsense.
The official apps have 2 versions. The official container version e.g. from Plex and one for the truenas app version. An update can be because plex pushed an update or the maintainer of the app changed something related to the truenas framework, e.g. an configurable field was added to the apps.
Without wanting in any way diminish or devalue the work behind it… IMHO pushing 2-3 updates in 2-3 days is pretty annoying. Multiply that for each app and the situation can became a bit frustating.
I have just 1 app from catalogue, Portainer, and this happening pretty constantly: every official update is pratically equivalent on 2-3 catalogue update
Pretty low on the list of reasons IMO, but definitely on there. Higher on the list is that iX have already given up on three apps systems, and I don’t see any reason to believe they’ll be any more committed to this one.
I just visited the forum out of concern over this as well. I’m running 15 apps, and all 15 have updates today, and that’s happened at least two other times in the last couple of weeks. I expect frequent updates, but for ALL of them to have updates is odd enough that it causes concern
I really like the way apps are handled in TrueNAS now, so I’m inclined to stick it out, but there are some really good points in this thread. I do run a couple of other Docker servers for some of my “critical” homelab services.
I’m pretty new to this forum. Does anyone know if the TrueNAS team regularly reviews this forum for issues and concerns, or is there a more appropriate place to escalate concerns like this?
As mentioned several time, most of these ain’t “real” app updates but just changes in the Truenas setup recipe (adding macvlan support for instance). I monitor real update availability in portainer and only update when apps has an actual update.
No need for the updated scripts if you are not deploying new or redeploying existing apps.
Or if 2-3 updates a week is too much, maybe just update once a week
