Friend-to-Friend TrueNAS Backups: A mostly trustless and scalable solution

Hi TrueNAS community!

I’ve developed a solution for setting up secure, friend-to-friend remote backups without requiring root access to each other’s TrueNAS instances. This method allows for:

  • Secure ZFS replication between friends
  • No need for root access on either system
  • Full use of ZFS features for backups
  • A “de-clouded” remote backup solution

I’ve written a detailed guide on my blog: Friend-to-Friend TrueNAS Backups: Secure, De-Clouded Remote Storage

The guide covers:

  • Setting up a TrueNAS VM on Proxmox
  • Configuring iSCSI targets
  • Ensuring network isolation
  • Scaling your backup storage

I hope this helps anyone looking for a secure, decentralized backup solution! Feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts.

Have you thought about why this wouldn’t work with a local TrueNAS VM on TrueNAS?
