Hardware Selection for first Home NAS

4 disks in a Raid Z2 makes no sense. You only get 32TB of storage, and you can lose 2 disks. Setting up two mirror pools gives you the same 32TB of storage, 2 disk failure buffer, and will be significantly faster.

I beg to differ:

  • Two mirrored VDEVs do NOT give you 2-disk redundancy, only 1-disk redundancy in the worst case.
  • With raidz expansion you can improve the storage to parity ratio, something you can NOT do with mirrored VDEVs.
