HBA Cable Selection

Hello Guys,

Wishing everyone Happy Christmas Eve today!

So, i’ve got all the parts for my NAS and i’ve got Supermicro X11SSL-CF which was being used as a Windows PC and it will turn into a small use case NAS.

I was looking for the Mini SAS HD (i believe thats the connector what this board has) and i found these two cables:

However, the cable from my old gear is:

and it works with this (yes i tested it with the board i have and it seems to work fine).

Now, i’m not sure what’s the difference between the CBL-SAST-0556 (tested and works) vs CBL-SAST-0823 and CBL-SAST-0591. Is the 0556 a normal cable and the other two are reverse breakout cable and won’t work with my setup as it says “reverse breakout crossover cable”.

I’m new to this field and if someone can explain, it would be really helpful.

Thanks

Reverse is if you have a sas backplane for your drives, and 4 sata ports on card or motherboard.

Breakout cable splits the motherboard mini sas hd connector into 4 sas/sata data connectors.

Reverse breakout does the opposite.

The cables are not reversible, thus the two types.

You want regular breakout (doesn’t have to be from super micro)

The connector is also called SFF-8643
