HDD alert via email, nothing on admin interface

It’s been 3 days I 've been receiving alerts regarding one of my HDDs.
Two mails each day.
The first one :
New alerts:

  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 398 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

Current alerts:

  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 1856 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 200 Offline uncorrectable sectors.
  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 1864 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors (changed +8).
  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 279 Offline uncorrectable sectors (changed +79).
  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 1904 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 398 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

The second one :
New alerts:

  • Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 1904 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.

Current alerts:

So I guess my HDD might be diying. But in the Truenas admin interface there is no such alert. Everything seems fine.

What should I do?

Also if I want to replace that disk, how am I supposed to identify it? Is there a way to know which physical disk is sdb?

I don’t know why the admin UI isn’t showing any alerts, but you can ssh into the machine and run “smartctl” on /dev/sdb, and with that verify the SMART errors (uncorrectable sectors etc.), and also see the disk’s serial number. You should be able to verify that serial number on the hard drive itself (on my HGST drives, there’s a small sticker on the front of the drives with that serial number).

Thanks a lot. I did thought about smartctl (although I can’t seem to find the command…) but I hadn’t thought about the stickers with the serial number.

smartctl is only available to the root user, so after you ssh in as your admin user, you have to run it with “sudo”. I think it’s in either /sbin or /usr/sbin, which isn’t in the path for the non-root users, so you have to specify the path when you run it.

I installed Scrutiny in the meantime. it says sdb is ok… But sda and sdd are prone to fail soon :weary:

First of all, Always go by the serial number. The drive IDs can change on you, they are not fixed to a specific drive even though they may seem so at times.

Post the output of the following command (include sudo if you are not logged in as root): sudo smartctl -x /dev/sda and place in code brackets </> above in the bar. Do this for each drive you have (sdb, sdc, etc). But based on the data you posted, drive sdb is failing hard. Replace as soon as possible.

While you are at is, also post the output of sudo zpool status -v for completeness.
