I’m looking for some help diagnosing a stubborn issue with my TRUENAS-MINI-R’s IPMI. My goal is to set up hardware-level email alerts using a Gmail account, but the connection always fails.
System Details:
System: iXsystems TRUENAS-MINI-R
IPMI Firmware: Version 03.60 (Build Date: 07/28/2017)
Here is a detailed summary of everything I have tried to rule out common configuration errors:
SMTP Configuration:
Verified the server is smtp.gmail.com.
Tried both Port 587 and Port 465.
Toggled the "SMTP SSL Auth" checkbox on and off for both port configurations.
Authentication:
Used a 16-character Google App Password as required.
Generated a brand new App Password to be certain there were no typos.
Confirmed the Gmail account is not receiving any "Security Alert" or "Sign-in attempt blocked" notifications from Google.
Network & Time:
Verified the IPMI's network settings (IP, gateway, DNS) are correct.
Confirmed via network monitoring that the IPMI is making a successful TCP connection to Google's servers.
Verified the IPMI's date and time are accurate and synced via NTP.
Recipient:
Attempted to send alerts to multiple different email addresses, all of which failed.
Given that the firmware is from 2017, my primary suspect is that it lacks support for the modern TLS encryption that Gmail requires.
My main hesitation is that I remember the original packaging for the system had a warning about not updating the BIOS or firmware. Does that warning apply to the IPMI firmware in a situation like this, or is an update the correct path forward?
Has anyone else run into this with older Supermicro IPMI firmware, or is there another workaround I haven’t considered?
Thanks for any advice.
