Help understanding my SMART test

I have been getting notifications about bad sectors for a week or two , but each time I checked the SMART test results in the gui everything passed. I even ran some manual tests that still showed passed, until the most recent one that did fail. Should I be worried? These are brand new drives.

These were the notifications: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.

Two problems.

  1. Yes, the drive is indeed failing. The selftest log shows it cannot complete an extended test.
  2. This is an SMR drive. Highly discouraged for use with ZFS.

Is the pool constructed with redundancy? What is its layout?

zpool status -v <poolname>

Its 2 drives mirrored.

I would consider replacing the failing drive[1], and to switch to only CMR drives when it’s feasible for you. It depends how valuable and irreplaceable this data is.

It seems there’s not much data on your pool, since it only took 10 minutes to scrub.

  1. If you have a free SATA port, you can add the new drive into the mirror, which will convert the vdev to a three-way mirror. After the resilver succeeds, you can detach the failing drive and RMA it or toss it, or do whatever you want with it. ↩︎

thanks for all the info, this is the first time I couldn’t reddit search my way out of it. I only put a couple dozen movies on to test jellyfin and some other apps which is good.

I actually bought 3 drives and put one in my pc so I do have one to resilver with. I didn’t know the CMR drives thing so thanks for the tip, I’ll switch over to some ironwolf drives then. This has been a great learning moment.
