Help with VPN for TrueNas Apps

Hi all, I’m looking for some help, it was very clear to me under TrueCharts apps how to instigate VPN for each applications. In fact it was very simple.

I’m in the process of moving over, but having trouble, under the Trueness catalog the application distinctly have few options, noticeably missing is the ability to initiate VPN, NIC and kill switches…

Am I missing something here, I’m struggling to find out how to set this up and get in an ideal config. Im sure the solution is obvious but for some reason I’m missing the picture on how to setup a VPN just for some apps, while still maintain access over my local network.

If anyone can point me in the right direction of an idiots guide, I’ll help prove the guide correct.

Thank is advance…

There is currently no option to directly integrate VPN with TrueNAS charts apps as you are used to. There will be options to do this in the 24.10 Electric Eel release, when the new Docker backed applications are available.

For now, there is a way to set up VPN for apps using a separate install of the Tailscale app, but I’ll leave that up to more experience users to explain.

Ah, ok, thank you for posting back appreciate it; I was somewhat bashing my head against a brick wall on this one.

Maybe the tail scale option would suffice, and or maybe there’s other practice with apps other have employed, so, if anyone else reading they has a working solution or thoughts I’d be happy to hear them.

@DjP-iX again, thanks for the reply.

Hi all,

Since the release of 24.10 Electric Eel RC, has anyone manage to use a VPN option within the Apps config?

As stated in an earlier post, I’ve not migrated yet due to the problem of missing the VPN option which I want for some of my apps, so if anyone reading this knows or has taken a different route I’d be happy to hear about it.

Any thanks.

I haven’t installed EE-RC2 to see how the final community/official app config UI looks like to see if you can add config for dependencies/networking to use another container for Gluetun.

But the Custom App option lets you just use your own docker-compose, which will allow you to use Gluetun (or other VPN) with other containers. There are a ton of compose examples for using Gluetun with Qbittorrent (or other apps) on the web and even here on the truenas forums.

Thanks Craig, I’ll investigate the Gluetun option. If this is the way to go, I’ll take this option and will report back.

Thanks for taking the time to write back….

This has been working for me with QBitTorrent since we got access to dockge in the beta. I have no reason to believe that it won’t work for other apps in a similar fashion
