The scenario is as follows: I have a server at home, and I can access it normally via SMB on Windows. However, I also need to access my files remotely, when I’m away from home. I tried using TailScale, but as you may already know, SMB doesn’t work well over long distances and with latency. The file transfer time was huge.
So I’m trying to get FTP to work, so I can access it remotely, but without success.
I’ve already set up a new user just for FTP, with a home directory in the same SMB folder that I use.
I’ve also successfully set up the DDNS-UPDATER application, with DuckDNS. I can access my Truenas GUI through the browser only through my domain, on another external network.
The only thing I can’t do is access FTP. I have already opened UTP/UDP port 21, configured DMZ, and was even able to access another dataset via Filezilla for a brief moment. However, I want to access my Dataset that I use via SMB, and preferably via Windows Explorer.
Does anyone have a solution or alternative method that is better than FTP (and that is simple)?
I need a method other than SMB and VPN, because the speeds are not viable for me.
And yes, I know that FTP is not secure over the internet, but I have no problem with that. I just want an efficient solution.
I don’t have much experience with servers, but I have good knowledge in IT. I just need a little help.
