I have an Ubuntu VM installed on TrueNAS Scale that I would like to boot into single user mode. Normally I would use the Grub menu to edit the boot settings, but this virtual machine does not show a Grub menu when booting. It just starts booting immediately. The instructions I have found online do not match what I see in the TrueNAS scale UI. Perhaps it is because I am using an older version (23.10). In any case, can someone point me to instructions on how to do this.
Haven’t used VMs under Scale, but in vsphere you can set boot delay. Maybe that’s an option? I know with virtualbox you need to quickly spam F2 in the VM’s window when it’s starting.
Check you setting for the VM. There may be one to delay starting VM until VNC or whatever the remote viewer is until after it connects. That may give you the chance to interrupt and choose boot options
Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn’t find any vm options in TrueNAS to delay the boot but I did find a different solution. I used the “Send Ctl-Alt-Del” option on the Spice menu to reboot the vm without shutting down the Spice display. That allowed me to see the entire boot process instead of missing the first few seconds. Previously I was trying to reboot using the TrueNAS user interface which requires restarting the Spice display. I never saw the grub menu because the grub timeout was set to 0. There was not enough time to start the Spice display and type my console password before the boot process started.
