How to install Plex Server on Dragonfish?

I have tried for days and tried hundreds different configurations. I’ve looked on every available post and can’t get it to work.
If i use official image it installs only in client mode - no server available.
If i use Plex pass image it’s stuck in developing mode
Everything was working fine when the truecharts version was availaible my problems started when i deleted truechart version and tried to install “supported” Plex Server version.
Does anybody else are having these kind of problems?

Are you using the old datasets from truechart?
Have you tried to set up new clean hostpath datasets?

Usually if you had plex server running and you’re switching deployment version, e.g. from truecharts to ix app or docker in a jail etc, you have to generate a plex claim token to claim your existing server, if you’ve not generated a plex claim token and specified it during the installation you can’t access your existing plex server. to generate a claim token you have to go to Claim | Plex

Edit: the plex claim token has a lifetime of 5 Minutes, so generate it if you’ve already setup the rest of the installation, otherwise it can be expired when you finish the setup.

…which I think confirms what I said back when iX announced this madness: making drastic changes is unwise and premature. You went from a working Plex installation that would have continued to work just fine (albeit without updates) to, well, nothing at all.

But that’s water under the bridge at this point; the damage is done. The “secret sauce” that isn’t documented anywhere (as far as I can see) is the claim token that Lars mentions. Paste that into the app configuration, and it should link the app up with your account and you’ll be good to go.

If that doesn’t work, try logging an issue against the chart at GitHub - truenas/charts: TrueNAS SCALE Apps Catalogs & Charts with as much detail as possible about what’s happening.

He could have just kept running the Truecharts version until Eel right? That was the easy path. Unless I am mistaken, nothing more than a desire to be on the latest and greatest is driving the madness? Plex on Scale obviously runs fine, but, it’s the process of migrating that is the issue.

Thank you guys for your reply.
That’s right, now i have my truenas scale with TBs of movies, music and pictures to be access only on ipads and iphones (my kids) through weird “access SMB server” interface, which can’t play anything with .mkv for example - what a joy last few weeks were…
What do you think my next step should be?
Wait months for new version of Truenas Scale and hope that apps going to work?
Install VM like Windows 10 and run Plex Server there?
Which direction do you think gods of Truenas will go?

Yep–that’s what I’m doing, along with the rest of my TrueCharts apps.

Other than that, I think some people are put off by “unmaintained” (apparently not recognizing that that’s the default status of any of iX’ apps), and some are bothered by TC’s behavior following this announcement (IMO, their decisions to not follow iX’ into Compose-land, and to archive their charts repo as it then was, were entirely reasonable; their decision to pull the repo entirely not so much).

But the wisest course of action, IMO, would have been (and still is, if possible) to just keep doing what you’re doing. If you have iX apps and they work for you, keep them. If you have TC apps and they work for you, keep them. Once the respective migration paths are out, evaluate them and see if they meet your needs. If not, then make a change.

Get a claim token using the link Lars posted, paste it into your Plex app configuration, and enjoy the Plex app on SCALE.

Done that hundreds different ways, it doesn’t work.
I know about five minutes limit, that’s why always open that link after any changes to installation and before starting app.
Every time same results: no server or deploying loop.
Thank you for trying.

The truenas Plex server is working fine for me.

Are you using host path for the Config, data, log, and transcode folders?

If you are not I would make that change.

I have mine datasets set up like this.

-appData
-Plex
-config
-data
-log
-transcodes

Also a fresh install wouldnt hurt either.

if you are using the ix-applications folder I would kill that data set in the CLI.

Ive had to unmount my pool then in the cli run these comands

Sudo Su
ZFS List
ZFS destroy -r

Then remount my apps and reinstall the app.

I’d uhhh - be careful with that. Folks might not be paying enough attention & copy/paste that without realizing what they’re doing & destroy the wrong things.

Edit:
@Przemo, since you’ve basically installed Plex like 10,000 times at this point. Do you want to delete Plex, and show us step by step, with screenshots how you’re doing it? (You can & should edit out your claim token in the screenshots) Maybe we’ll be able to notice some missed step & help you?

Just want to say Plex server works for me on Scale including .MKV files. The only issue I have is the sometimes it will be stuck in “deploying” and I have to stop the app and restart. Can’t wait for eel.

Could you post the logs from that container? perhaps there is info what’s going wrong?

Can you check that you set the permissions for the dataset correctly, so that the apps-group can access the data? If not, this can be done when defining the data storage for plex or when choosing the ixVolume.

Install the 1.7.60 version.

That version has the server media included
