How To Setup Media Folders / Software Storage Space

hi guys I am new to this so bare with me.

ive got truenas core setup on my home server.

and im wondering how I setup multiple shared folders that I can read and right too from different computers such as Mac’s or Windows based machines.

anyone able to give me some advice on where to begin ??? such as setup multiple folders such as music, pictures, etc

thanks for any help

I am learning so much already.

Best place I can recommend is the Getting Started which walks through the basic storage setup. You can create the datasets in your preferred media folder naming scheme. Then move on to Sharing, Backups following the next guide and so on.

thanks for the link’s and you was a massive help.

I am still working out sharing but ill get there fully im sure over time.

if it was windows id have no issues. but its getting used to the way TrueNas operates.

A dataset is a file system. It can, and probably should, contain multiple folders.
Shares are based on datasets, not on folders.

All your clients can use SMB shares.

Do the different clients want to access the same data? One dataset, and one group with multiple users. Folders as you like.
Do the different clients want different data? Should some data be served only to certain clients but not to others? Different datasets.

hi thanks for the reply.

and yes id like to give everyone access to the same media in the home. if that makes sense.

I also want to be able to backup my Mac and windows machines.

but that may be another topic for now.

can I allow anyone with network access to read the files such as my smart tv without logging in ?

thanks
