HP proliant DL380 g9

Hello !

Im quite new on the server stuff, but i saw that these are somewhat cheap, i presume RAID controllers attleast needs to be changed, but i could use advice with the following ebay item, is it worth it etc? It would just be a home nas server for media etc.

That listing shows empty drive bays or drive cages. They’re missing?

I’ll just point you to the documents for the latest Scale release, hardware section and the ZFS Primer. I think most of the needed info will be there. You are on the right track by trying to get server grade gear. Post back questions after you look these links over. There is also a hardware guide on the old forums. A little dated but still very relevant. I’ll try to post that link too

Yes it does not have any caddys with it, but i got it little cheaper than listed so i bought it, and now looking caddys for it to start with. After reading these excelent links, i see that i have a huge learning curve ahead

Got a few caddys now, been learning and installed truenas. Seems promising. Still waiting LSI HBA controller, need to get SAS cables to it after i see what kind of i need for it. Also this model dl380 keeps insane fan noise when it does not have HP drives in it, so i flashed ilo4 with a hacked version that enables fan control, much better now.

After i got that LSI card installed and functional, i move drives from old truenas system to this one, which raises a question. Pool has 4 drives, sda, sdb, sdd and sde, does it matter in which order they will be installed in the new system ?

Also, i made a configuration backup through UI in current system, if i restore it in new one, will it bring back my current containers too along the pools (there is no pools before i restore configuration so where does it install containers or does it make it in order after restoring pools)?

No. Drives are internally identified by GPTID.
