I need advice on getting three 4TB NAS drives for TrueNAS for local backup

I bought some NAS drives a few years ago that failed miserably

It turns out they were SMR NAS drives that weren’t compatible.

It there any decent drives around anymore, since AI seems to have gobbles them up.

When in stock for me, it is cheaper (with current prices) to get like two 10 TB drives. Maybe scale the capacity & live with a mirror instead of having three drives?

How well does Mirror work in raid with TrueNAS?

can you just add a third drive later for a z1 raid with redundancy?

Also, what about seagate/WD RED, WD Blue, Toshiba N300? and others?

Mirror is a form of RAID (Its called RAID 1 in other systems)

Nope - you cannot convert RAID type

Anything as long as its not SMR. WD Pro, Tosh N300 are all goodWD Blue may be SMR, also these are dekstop drives. Not really designed for 24*7 ops

Seagate Ironwolf and Exos, Toshiba N300 and MG, WD Red Plus/Pro and Gold (NAS/Enterprise) are all known good NAS drives.
Drives over 8 TB are generally all CMR (there are some Data Centre drives which are SMR, but you’d have to look hard to find them in the first place).
Smaller capacity drives in the WD Red range should be checked carefully, as there’s a sneaky nix of SMR and CMR in there.
