I need help for a wise Nas dimensioning

I have an ignote, but well equiped, 7845hs chinese mobo with 64Gb of non ecc memories.

I will install proxmox and in a VM (I read all raccomandations) truennas.
My workflows in very simple, personal use in homelab mainly for media streaming, I would like to experiment iscsi share.

I will not install apps on truenas (because i have proxmox for it) and for networking I have 2 2,5g nics (but only one cable :)).

My data are in 4X14Tb Mechanical disks in RAIDZ2 (i am migrating from n100 TRUENAS).

  1. How many VCPU for Truenas? (4 looks me enough, it will remaing 12 for the rest)
  2. How many memory? (my actual nas is running with 32GB with apps but it looks me overkilling for my workload).
  3. which device to use per LARC end LOG? (i can choice beetwen 1) a NVME 500gb and 2) a 2T sata SSD or 3) 212Gb sata SSD).

Thanks to all
Olindo

Thans for your suggestione

  1. for simple file storage 4 are plenty;
  2. 16GB should be enough, but with SCALE I always feel a bit hesitant to suggest less than 32GB;
  3. you likely do not need a SLOG, and you need at least 64GB of RAM[1] for L2ARC: use neither.

Suggested readings:

  1. you want between 4 and 8 times the RAM TN has available as L2ARC: with 64GB you should use a 250GB or a 500GB drive, better if NVMe and with a high DWPD; with less than 64GB of RAM you should not use L2ARC. ↩ī¸Ž

The lesson for me is:

  1. 32g for truenas
  2. nor zil nor larch
  3. no use iscsi
  4. i will use nvme and sata ssd for proxmox host

Thanks
