hi guys , new to Nas in general, wanting to install truenas scale on a hp mini 800 i5 16gb ram has a 1tb hdd and a 1tb nvme can this be done or do i need another ssd to replace the planetary? both drives have data on them used for volumio music player should i shift f10 cmd diskprt and clean or can this be done during install? have tried usb install but couldn’t get passed the select drives.
I think you need to spend some time in the docs; the link is at the top of the page. But some relevant points:
- The TrueNAS boot device is only the boot device; it can’t be used for other purposes without some hackery that you shouldn’t be attempting if you have to ask how to do it. Thus, you’d need at least one other storage device in the computer; recommendation would be a small (30 GB or so, or the smallest you can get) SSD.
- TrueNAS only uses ZFS; it has no provision to create or use drives with other filesystems. Using your existing drives with TrueNAS would thus mean reformatting them, losing any data on them.
i dont care about the data on exiting drives i have already backed up to main computer my question is can i run truenas on the hdd and have the nvme for the pool and do i need to format first or can it be done with the lastest truenas version as of yesterday . i have 2 drives currently and will eventually run a nvme to usb c externally as a third
You can, but it seems like a waste.
it is but its from a laptop that shit itself so will never use in my other computer i would rather use a 120 ssd which i might do down the line.not sure why it hung up on drive selction ill wipe drives first and check bios i know most run on servers or nas is there anything i need to change in hp bios i quickly read some of the links you attached but related to there micro server
