I’m having issues installing TrueNas Scale - I downloaded the recent ISO image from the official website and flashed it to a USB using balenaEtcher. I keep getting this error message even after I updated the Supermicro BIOS to the most recent one.

I also ran the memtest86 test (1 pass) and found no error which is strange because the screenshot error says there’s something wrong with the memory.

Build:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) E3-1275V5 @ 3.60 GHz Processor SR2LK
Micron 16GB (1x 16GB) DDR4 3200MHz ECC UDIMM 1Rx8 CL22
Supermicro X11SSH-F
2x Western Digital WD Red Plus 8TB 3.5" NAS HDD, WD80EFPX
1x Kingston 480gb SSD (trying to install TrueNas onto this)

I will try making a bootable drive using Ventoy and see if that works.

Any help will be appreciated!

some additional info, before it started installing it shows a screen saying

Copying /run/live/medium/live/filesystem.squashfs to RAM

Sending incremental file list

can’t create /root/etc/network/interfaces: nonexistent directory

systemd: Failed to open /dev/shm device, ignoring:: innapropriate ioctl for device

Those sound like normal messages while installing. You might want to try powering off and reseating your RAM.

I did 2 passes, the ram is fine. I feel it’s an incompatibility between the RAM and mobo. I’ve reached out to supermicro customer support to see if the RAM is ok. I went into BIOS and disabled ECC support and got Truenas working for now, will need to find better RAM for the mobo.

Your system is noting multi-bit errors occurring, this is a huge warning sign telling you your RAM is not working as it should. Disabling these hardware checks is only going to hide the ongoing corruption from you.

Personally, I can’t think of a usage case where corrupt RAM potentially tainting anything that passes through it is okay, even if all you’re using the server for is storing Linux ISOs.

My guess is that SuperMicro will look at their QVL and if your RAM isn’t on it, they will just shrug and say that it’s your problem to solve.

Memtest86 runs 4 passes by default, my suggestion is to let it run that long at the very least, but ideally, let it run for a day or more due to the clear signal that something is amiss. Even then, memtest86 isn’t perfect, it doesn’t catch all errors.
