Story
So I am completely new to truenas and wanted to make a jellyfin server using hardware for at least a year or longer to see if I wanted to fork over the cash to build a proper media server and I had this laptop lying around not getting used anymore and I wanted to try something new. I did a bit of research and saw that truenas has an active community and a nice simple interface that is fully custom and that fit all the boxes for me. I manage to set everything up and got jellyfin to work and connect to other devices

Problem
cpu temps sometimes reach 80 decrees Celsius and the fans never seem to ramp up to full speed. have had the server up for a few days and I cant seem to find any way to control the fans. I see people saying to buy something to control fan speeds but their has got to be a way to do it within a app, virtual Machine, or force the fans to spin at a certain speed through code.

Useful Information

Before when the laptop used windows you could control the fan speeds with an app called predator sense. it’s a program that you can download from the manufacture website

Would really like Idea’s and if you can please explain the process since I have been using Truenas since August 17 2025 and have only watch 4 video’s on the setup. Sorry for any grammar mistakes and thanks for the future help

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to solve your problem reliably since TrueNAS is an appliance system. You aren’t supposed to add Linux packages. It’s possible, but strongly discouraged. (I.e.: You will probably break things beyond repair.)

If I were you, I’d think about this: Why are you using a laptop as a storage platform? Laptops have several disadvantages:

  • The drives are rather slow due to energy optimization
  • The case is completely cramped, so things get hot easily
  • Your storage I/O options (in terms of available ports) will also be limited

If you insist on using Jellyfin on that laptop, install a Linux distribution with fancontrol support (lm-sensors in the repos).
For good cooling and using Jellyfin, get a cheap PC with good active cooling and more I/O, such as Fujitsu barebones (with SATA ports and/or M.2 slots).

a community member wrote a little app himself
maybe give it a try
