Is this HDD dead or is it the cable

So I have a 6 month old Seagate 16TB drive that shows as faulted in the UI and i get notifications that its unavailable but passes smartctl tests.

I did a RMA with seagate and removed the drive from the sever and added another drive.

now the drive thats showing under the same drive path /dev/sdd is now showing faulty? Is this a coincidence that both failed/fault and are using the same drive path.

Currently running a long test on the other drive that is under /dev/sdd. will post when complete.

Could be power supply or cabling issue. Try swapping the drive with a different drives cable/power cable. See if the issue moves with the cables.

You could be right but wont have time to test for a week or so. there is an adapter on the sata power that splits a single power connection into 8 power connections as i keep the drives outside the server in there own enclosure. Power cables with the PSU were not long enough to reach.

Weirdly enough i contact the seller of the Seagate drive and said the drive looks to be failing and sent them the Smart output and they told me they would send a replacement and i didnt need to send it back which is odd.

The disks are not actually running SMART tests. Definitely enable those ASAP and definitely run a long test manually on all your disks in the meantime.

This greatly worries me. A SATA power connector is not rated to run 2 HDs, let alone 8.

Ie it can be a fire hazard.

A molex peripheral connector is rated to run 4 HDs.

So, is it actually a sata power splitter :wink:

Or something else.

I had done a long test on the current SDD when i first created this thread.

I was under the impression that Truenas done smart tests on a regular basis but i can see thats not the case.

Created a task to run tests monthly on all drives by following this docs.

SMART tests are very low load, I’d recommend scheduling a short test at least weekly. I personally have a short test scheduled daily at midnight and then a long test scheduled bi-weekly.
If you haven’t already it is a good idea to schedule scrub tasks as well, I run a scrub on my pools monthly.

There an enable smart tests checkbox in Scale for each drive you want to run them on, and, the smart service has to be enabled. Then it does them “automatically”.
