Issue with my Truenas Scal after powerloss

Hello everyone,
Hope you’re doing well. I’m facing an issue with my server that I’m hoping you can help with. After successfully transferring my data from different drives to my TrueNAS SCALE server, it was running smoothly. I have an inverter with a longer switching time than a UPS, but it offers substantial backup.

Recently, there was a sudden power loss which caused the server to go offline. It restarted automatically afterwards, but now none of my disks or snapshots are visible. When I check the storage location, it appears to be empty.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Thanks in advance.

In order to give us some detailed information, can you please run the following commands and (so that the output retains its columnar format) please post the output of each command into a separate </> Preformatted Text box:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • sudo zpool status -v
  • sudo zpool import
  • lspci
  • sudo storcli show all
  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list

Hi Protopia,
Thanks for the support here are the requested details

First one dosent gave me any useful output. Just showing

Well I have no idea why the lsblk command doesn’t work on your Scale install, because it works fine on mine and here is the output (and I have no idea why your copy and pasted output has lost its formatting either):

The reason we need this output is that it allows us to check the mapping between device names (e.g. /dev/sda) we see in lsblk, and partuuids that we see in zpool import ( e.g. the partuuid that you have at fault 35aa855c-ffa1-491a-830c-4c867bc5c987).

Without this we cannot translate the bad partuuid 35aa855c-ffa1-491a-830c-4c867bc5c987 to the device name that we need to run smartctl to get the SMART stats for that device.

Simplifying the lsblk command in the hope that it works on your system please try:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID

If it still doesn’t work, please remove the first column that is in any error message and try again until you get one that works and post the output here.

The good news is that the zpool import suggests that the pool still has integrity (though there have been examples where it says it can be imported but then it turns out not to be without a lot of very technical stuff). What happens if you try:

  • sudo zpool import WorkersDev04

Hi Protopia,

Thank you so much for your reply…initially I’ve screenshots of everything then I OCR it to convert into text so there might be formatting. Truenas doesn’t directly allow me to copy paste.
I’ll try to make the command lsblk work.

Thanks and regards,
Parthm

If you are using SSH, normal copy & paste.

If you are using the UI shell, then Ctrl-Insert is copy and Shift-Insert is paste.

Hi Protopia,

Hope you are well,

I’ve ran these commands using Putty and they worked fine.
So the first command lsblk gave me this output.

I also tried the zpool import WorkersDev04 it gave me an output as mentioned below.

TBH I have not done any backup as of now. Please let me know if there are any ways to recover/restore pool without data loss.

Kind regards,

Hi, I am just looking that you replied to a post which is similar to my issue which is named: Scale v24.04.2 Lost One disk, Unable to import Pool from 2nd one on new H/W

@Protopia I am having 5 x 4TB drives running in raid z2 and out of that I’ve filled approx 7TB of them. I’ve 1 spare 4tb and 1 spare 6tb drives just in case if anything goes wrong. Also I have a few snapshots but they are not visible to me on truenas interface.

  1. /dev/sdf is a Seagate BarraCuda SMR drive ST4000DM004 which is completely unsuitable for ZFS redundant drives - even though this isn’t the drive with the problem you need to replace it ASAP once the pool import issue is solved.

  2. Now that we have the drive mappings we can see that the failing partuuid 35aa855c-ffa1-491a-830c-4c867bc5c987 belongs to /dev/sdc. Please run the following command and post the results (in </> again) so we can see whether there is a drive issue:

  • sudo smartctl -x /dev/sdc

Thx.

Hi Protopia,

Thanks for the reply and help so far I highly highly appriciate it, I’ve a spare WD purple I will replace it with that.

Here is the result of that command its quite large.

You clearly did a reboot since the lsblk was run as device assignments have changed - this SSD was previously on /dev/sde not /dev/sdc.

Work out the drive mapping and post the smartctl output for the relevant drive please.

Hi Protopia, yes I do shutdown at evenings.
This is the latest Lsblk

Hello,

Just by curiosity I tried zpool import. It gave me this output.

admin@truenas[~]$ sudo zpool import

action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier.

Shall I try forcefully importing it with this command zpool import -f WorkersDev04?

A power loss can cause issues with TrueNAS SCALE, potentially leading to boot failures, data corruption, or service disruptions. Try these steps:

  1. Check System Logs – Access logs via SSH (/var/log/) or the TrueNAS web UI to identify errors.
  2. ZFS Pool Status – Run zpool status to check for any degraded or corrupted pools. Use zpool scrub if needed.
  3. Filesystem Check – If the OS drive is affected, boot into recovery mode and check for filesystem errors.
  4. Service Restart – If specific services aren’t running, restart them via the CLI or web UI.
  5. Hardware Check – Inspect for potential disk or power supply issues that may have been triggered by the outage.

Eh??? What???

  1. System logs will not get written in the event of a power loss because … um … there is no power to write them with.

  2. Yes - but generally either the pool is fine or it won’t import at all. If it doesn’t import at all, then all zpool status will tell you is that it no longer exists. You need to run zpool import to see what pools are available but not already imported.

  3. EH?? WHAT??? The O/S drive is a ZFS pool too (“boot-pool”) so what tools are you going to use to check for file system errors? And this isn’t windows? What recovery mode are you talking about?

  4. Maybe - assuming that the boot doesn’t hang because an essential service fails to start.

  5. What are you looking for here exactly? Big red flags that read “Hardware failure here!”?

You can try it - perhaps sudo zpool import -f -R /mnt WorkersDev04?

But I suspect it will give you an I/O error again but you may be lucky.

You are great, guess what, it worked its showing on the interface. I just gave a system reboot and trying to access my-stuff and I am able to access it also all the snapshots I am able to view now.

Very big thank you! @Protopia

But the issue isnt fully resolved yet.

Kind regards,
Parthm
