Learning How To correctly backup My TrueNas System

Hello everyone,

I’m fairly new to TrueNAS and still learning how servers work. So far, I’m really happy with what TrueNAS has to offer, but I could use some help with understanding how to properly back up my system.

First, I’d like to learn how snapshots work—specifically, how to create them and how to use them to restore my system if something goes wrong.

Second, I want to make sure I know how to back up my configuration files so I can restore my settings if needed.

Any guidance or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It’s a single file. See:

Thanks for the links I will look it over, anyone else how something share on this topic? post away

I believe you have the best-in-forum, most comprehensive, and most importantly, most comprehensible, links in Dan’s response above.

One more to mention on saving configuration file(s):

System>General Settings>Manage Configuration tab at top RHS>Download File (to a local storage location you specify)

Make one of those downloads and look at the file name provided for the date/time stamp for understanding about how you might recover from a set of those file by choosing a “known good date/time”.

Thank you Redcoat this is kind of what I was looking for big thanks

I was also looking at some cloud services for Nas backups even tho I prefer my own home storage spaces. It says there are free ones but I am sure there are limitations

And I’m not seeing: RHS>Download File in my dashboard

RHS here is “right-hand side.”
