MacOS client intermittently can't drag & drop or cut & paste on SMB share

Hi all,

I am fairly new to TrueNAS SCALE. I migrated from Synology/Xpenology and am running TrueNAS SCALE Dragonfish-24.04.2.2 on Proxmox with passing through a SATA controller to which 5 disks are connected.

My TrueNAS setup is also joined to an Active Directory that I run here at home, the AD is implemented on Ubuntu 22.04 using Samba.

Things are running okay and I am happy with the result of migrating from Synology/Xpenology to TrueNAS.

However, today I stumbled over an issue for which I have not found any good explanation or solution, searching the TrueNAS forums and the internet in general.

On my SMB shares, which are accessed only by Mac clients (e.g. Apple M1 Pro, running Sonoma 14.6.1) I have great trouble with drag&drop and cut&paste functionality in the finder.

Generally, on a Mac you should be able to click and hold any file or folder on the SMB share and be able to move your mouse pointer and it should start dragging the folder/file. This only works sometimes, so it can take multiple attempts to start dragging which is a major problem for our usage. I have also noticed that the “Cut” and “Paste” shortcuts in Finder are greyed out.

I started looking at the configuration of the SMB shares and initially thought that it may be related to the chosen “Purpose” setting, but have encountered this issue for different SMB shares with different purposes.

I have shares set up as “Multi-protocol shares” when the share is accessed via SMB (Mac clients) and NFS4 (Docker containers running under Ubuntu Linux).

I also have some other shares set up with default parameters, which doesn’t seem to make a difference.

I am really out of ideas why this could be happening, can anyone please help point me into possible solutions, things to try out?

Many thanks!
