Happy long time CORE home user here. I have been running TrueNAS going back to 2013. I love the stability of FreeBSD, but the development and capabilities of SCALE, along with the gradual deprecation of CORE over the last year or two, caused me to begin to consider and study migrating over to SCALE from CORE.
I thought I would share my experience with the migration process.
My use case is pretty simple.
Plex media server for movies, TV, and family videos and photos. (Iocage jail)
Tail Scale for remote access. (Iocage jail)
Back up for a client PC. (SMB share)
Shared document storage (SMB share)
My hardware is PC based. Robust for home use and very stable.
AMD Ryzen 3 8 core processor
32GB RAM
850 W 80 Gold PS
Lots of case fans!
Mirrored boot SSD’s
12TB storage in a Z2 RAID (WD Red Plus drives)
Following the TrueNAS documentation for migration planning, I prepared my system for the migration. I also trolled the forums, and watched numerous videos from YouTube channels I trust.
Based on what I learned from all of this, I decided to perform a GUI migration by switching the “update train” from CORE 13.0-U6.7 to SCALE 24.04 Dragonfish. This seemed to be the best documented path.
My TrueNAS migrated over quickly, without any drama. After checking and testing, my configuration, SMB shares, storage pools, and data came over just fine. As expected, my Iocage jails no longer function, but the files and data did come over. I was pretty happy with the migration process.
I took care of some “basic housekeeping” to tweak setting for SCALE. Backed up again, and then upgraded to SCALE 24.10.2 Electric Eel. No drama!
Electric Eel 24.10 is pretty nice. I like the updated UI.
Working my way through tweaking the system settings for security and system stability, without difficulty.
I set up Dockge as an App on SCALE following the now famous videos from Captain Stux. Thank you, Captain Stux!!!
With a little bit of tinkering, Dockge is running just fine.
Using Dockge, I set up Docker containers for Plex and Tail Scale. Getting these up and running did take a bit of research and tinkering, but not bad for a first time Docker installation.
I have my TrueNAS migrated over to SCALE, and up and running with all of my functions operating normally.
TrueNAS Scale is pretty nice!
Thanks iX Systems for making the migration process easy.
So, there you go. A little sad to leave CORE and FreeBSD behind, but SCALE has everything I used on CORE, plus many other features that I can delve into when I am ready to.
