I’m current using TrueNAS Core v 13.0-U6.3, and plan to migrate to Scale.
I have read though the process, and think I understand most of the changes, and have even figured out how to move my Jails into Apps, however I’m confused with User configuration.
I currently have Microsoft Accounts on the home devices, and this is enabled within the User config on Core; however this option is missing from Scale v24.10.0.2.
From what I have read, I need to create local accounts in Scale with a Password which is not linked to the Microsoft Account, and then on each device (for each user) I have to connect to the SMB shares (and type in the TrueNAS account username and password, and tell Windows to save the credentials).
I find this a bit cumbersome, and wondered if there was an easy way to do this, or perhaps I’ve missed a step somewhere?
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jonathan
Its the same as CORE but under credentials and a new UI.
This should all migrate.
Yes, I know where the User section is, my query is about the “Microsoft Account” flag, which is missing in Scale.
It was removed from SCALE because it was a hack that encouraged bad practices (storing high-value passwords as NT hashes in a file server) and caused unpredictable behavior when TrueNAS was joined to AD. This was covered in release notes for either BlueFin or Cobia IIRC.

Ahh thanks for that, found it:
A bit annoying for home users who all use Microsoft Accounts to login to their devices. Need to have a think about the best way forward with regard to users having two logins/password.
One thing to remember is that this option was not using their microsoft account. It was storing a hash of your microsoft account password in TrueNAS and using it to authenticate. The moment you change MS account password, it breaks. It was also scheduled to be deprecated IIRC (using MS account password for NTLM auth).

That makes it much clearer, thanks for that. Think I’m ready to upgrade now, just need to finish my backup first!
