While I’m waiting for all the materials to assemble the new NAS, I was wondering what the best strategy is for migrating everything:
OS: The current version, 24.10.2.4, will remain on the same SATA SSD. Is it best to do a clean install and then upload the configuration file? If I install the latest version, 25.04 (Fangtooth), will it handle the old 24.10 configuration file?
APP: I’m currently on two different pools (I know, it’s bullshit): is there a way to move them all to the new pool I’ll create? What’s the best strategy, considering I don’t have a second NAS to back up? I don’t like the idea of reinstalling everything.
DATA: I have two 2TB WD drives in RAID 1. If I simply unplug them from the old NAS and plug them back into the new one, will everything work?
Forgive me for simplifying things, but I hope it was clear.
Any help is appreciated.
Will you keep all old disks? If yes then the migration is just a matter of making sure every disk is recognized by the new system.
All you should have to do is adjust network settings if the new system uses a different nic vendor and nic names change, think change from intel to realtek or vice versa.
I will keep the boot disk and the two WDs (photo, film, file etc.) in raid1. The disk where I currently have the apps will instead be replaced by 2 mirrored nvme.
If you use hostpaths for app storage you should be able to replicate from your old pools to your new one, adjust the paths in the apps from your old pool to your new one, apply the same permissions and your apps shoudl work…
So if I understand: I mount the old SSD with the APPS, create the new pool (with 2 nvme) and add the app datasets as in the old one with the right permissions, replicate the files on this one and finally set the paths in the apps.
Don’t know if this will create more trouble with space available… but maybe just extend the existing vdev of the stripe ssd with one of the NVME (so they are in mirror), then remove the ssd (keep it as a backup) and do the same with the other NVME. Resilver time for NVME and SSD is not so much.
Otherwhise what you say to me seems correct, but to not break every “path” you must also export both pool (without destroying data or configuration!!!) and then reimport the new pool so you can assign it a new name (the same of the old pool)
.as soon as the material arrives I’ll do some testing (this is also part of the fun)…in any case I also made a replica of the APPs on an external hard drive…you never know!
I will keep you updated
Thanks
It should only be temporary afaik, as soon as you replace the 256GB disk with the other 500GB, wait for the resilver to finish and then expand the pool you should get the whole 500GB
