Mini-R. Core -> Scale, M.2 disappeared from BIOS

As the title says, I have a Mini-R. I installed SCALE on an M.2 drive that previous had CORE on it. I’ve saved all my settings and such. When I rebooted, the M.2 is no longer listed in the bios. Obviously truenas will not boot. I’ve never had this happen in 30+ years of computing. Any ideas?

I would make sure the M2 is installed correctly, if it is not in the bios it is not inserted correctly, the drive is dead, or the M2 is not supported by the BIOS.

Are you booting in UFEI mode and have you installed SCALE with this mode enabled?

Hi Theo, it’s been running for 1.5 years on that M.2. No hardware changed – I simply just installed SCALE.

Yes to both. The drive doesn’t appear in bios. Not listed at all

Was UEFI set before you installed SCALE?

Try setting it to UEFI only and reinstall.

I can definitely try that. However, bios doesn’t even recognize that the M.2 is plugged in. I doubt the installer will see it? I can try.

Give it a shot.

Well, this appears to be at least part of the issue. Booting in UEFI mode only and selecting the flash drive leads me to a grub rescue screen.

Alright, finally had time to do this. This solved it:

  1. Rewrote the iso the same flash drive using Rufus. Used DD mode instead of ISO mode.

  2. Set bios to UEFI only (it already was)

  3. This allows me to choose UEFI: Flash drive name

  4. Install

  5. Reboot (I didn’t remove the install media)–worked fine.

Writing the iso in windows with DD mode was what solved it. Thanks Johnny!!
