Mixed Disk Capacities

Hello,

on my TrueNAS SCALE 24.04.2 I created a RAIDZ3 pool with 7 harddrives. As the drives I have added have different sizes, TrueNAS complains at the Storage Dashboard with an orange exclamation mark “Mixed Disk Capacities”.

Is this just a reminder, because TrueNAS assumes I have combined the wrong drives or does this bring any problems beside some unusable diskspace and - maybe - some differences in drive speeds?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Thomas

The usable capacity is determined by the smallest drive.

So, nothing to worry beside some wasted disk space?

Is it possible to dismiss this warning that the orange exclamation mark disappears?

However, extremely importantly you MUST check that your drives are NOT SMR.

If your drive sizes vary wildly, you may also wish to think about whether you want to use the bigger drives for a separate pool to avoid so much wasted space.

Sensibly, since these are old drives, you have chosen RAIDZ3 as a reflection of the higher risk of drives failing.

Normally no.
