Move Z1 data to Z2 without reinstalling

Hello Friends, I’m running TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10.2 and still pretty new.

I built two servers, a Primary and a Backup (Mirror) Both are the same equiptment.

Everything was going well until I noticed the Primary was at 20% storage capacity and the the Backup was at 18%

I had accidently choose Z1 when building the Backup :astonished:

On the Backup, Is there a way I can create a Z2, and copy all the data from Z1, then remove Z1 and have Z2 at full storage capacity?

Step by step instructions would be most awesome.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions, wisdom, comments and ideas.

Blessings…

  1. Is RAIDZ1 on the backup server actually a problem given that it only holds a backup copy of your data? Couldn’t you just leave it?

  2. Since it is a backup, why not simply destroy the pool and recreate it as RAIDZ2 and then copy the data from your primary again?

  3. If you have unused disks on the backup you could create a RAIDZ2 pool in parallel with the RAIDZ1, but you cannot shrink the RAIDZ1 to free up entire disks, nor can you create the RAIDZ2 on the same disks at the same time as keeping the RAIDZ1.

Thanks, that was helpful

Hey Protopia,

  1. I had thought about that, the anal retentive part of me wanted both machines to be completely the same. Also, I liked the idea of having the extra security of 2 disks dying and still be able to recover.

  2. The main problem is time involved in data transfer. I’ve been having problems getting the 10gig NIC to work (including lack of time) I was hoping before it gets to full, I would have options to do it within same machine.

  3. This answers my question. Other than another set of disks, I will need to use option 2.

Thanks again! -timBER
