NAS build question with RAID Controller

Hello all,

I’ve recently stumbled upon TrueNAS and had a question about a build I’m prepping I wanted to see if there were any issues with this. I thought I read something about not using a RAID controller for TrueNAS, but is that true? Below is the build I’m planning.

Edit *I’m planning on using this for Veeam for my RAID storage. I have never used TrueNAS before.

Rack-Mounted Chassis Model: SilverStone RM22-308 (2U, 8 hot-swap bays for 3.5" drives)

Rail Kit: SilverStone Technology RMS03-26 Tool-Less Ball Bearing Sliding Rail kit for rackmount Chassis, SST-RMS03-26

Motherboard Model: Supermicro X12SPL-F (C621A, LGA 4189, ATX, single-socket)

Processor (CPU) Model: Intel Xeon Gold 6330 (28-core, 2.0 GHz, 205W)

CPU Cooler Model: SilverStone Technology XE02-4189 2U Small Form Factor Server/Workstation CPU Cooler for LGA4189 Socket, SST-XE02-4189

Memory (RAM) Model: 96GB DDR4 ECC Registered RAM

RAID Controller Model: RocketRAID 3740C (16-channel PCIe 3.0 x8 RAID controller)

Drives Model: Western Digital Gold or Red (8 drives for RAID 6)

SSD for OS Model: Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD for TrueNAS

Power Supply Model: Silverstone GM1000 2U Gold Cybenetics Gold 1000W 2U Redundant Power Supply (GM1000-2UG-V2), SST-2R1000FCGD-A

Network Interface Card (NIC) Model: Intel X710-DA2 10GbE (2-port 10GbE SFP+ adapter)

2 x Internal Mini SAS to SATA Cable (SFF-8643 to SATA Forward Breakout, 3.3ft)
2 x Cable Matters 10Gbps DAC Twinax SFP Cables (5m / 16.4ft)

Absolutely! Get a plain SAS HBA rather than a RAID controller, or expect to loose your pool.

Other than the RAID controller, I see no red flag in your build list, but this looks like an awful lot of power for an 8-wide raidz2 (not “RAID6”).
How is the storage presented to Veeam? SMB? NFS? :+1:
Or iSCSI? :-1:

Thank you for the fast response! I do appreciate it and will look into these articles now.

The second is only relevant if Veeam does require iSCSI. Then you’re redoing your build for mirrors, more drives for the capacity, more RAM, and possibly an Optane SLOG.

The plan is to get two of these builds to replace our old Synology backups we currently have that are no longer receiving updates.

Sorry I am still getting used to GNU/Linux terms.

I was planning on SMB or NFS yes.

No GNU/Linux terminology here—and you marked the thread for CORE (FreeBSD).
Just some plateform-independent ZFS terminolgy.
