Greetings all, and thanks in advance for any help/insight you can offer. I’ve built several computers, build and ran a Windows Home Server, and have run some NUCs as small single app machines. I’m now looking to build a TrueNAS scale server that can also host some VMs in my home. We are a family of 5, so I can’t ever imagine exceeding 10 total users at one time.
I intend to run TrueNAS on the hardware. I won’t have/need more than 3 HDDs or 5 SSDs (tbd) for some limited file storage (for about 7-21TB total storage). I want to run some VM/Docker containers to host a Minecraft server (in-home use only), home automation (Home Assistant or another option), possibly a Roon server, and maybe a few other VM/apps for fun.
I’d like to keep temps and noise down if possible. I’m starting from scratch on components and have only settled on a Sliger 3u rack case as it’s short enough to fit my smaller rack enclosure and can even support a 240mm AIO.
I do need motherboard/cpu/ram recommendations. I’d rather have a little room to grow and make sure there’s enough RAM and CPU for TrueNAS to run just fine while still hosting those VMs/apps without any hickups.
