Problem/Justification
New and experienced users need to note a variety of settings within the UI and the reasons for doing so, along with practicalities like new-for-old HDD replacement schedules. Adding Youtube/other URLs to refer to (for example why certain settings were chosen for backup/replication/snapshot generation).
Impact
All trueNAS users would have the ability to use (or not) the notes box which would be conveniently co-located with the page it refers to.
The advantage would be a note which can’t be “lost” (literally like a post-it note, or figuratively due to the loss of a datapool or a USB thumb drive or a desktop file).
A disadvantage might be coding overhead plus the need to store the notes with the config (protected by secret seed)
User Story
Whilst configuring TN and whilst on a particular page within the webGUI, a user could easily enter notes associated with the setup or, later, with the maintenance. The notes would become part of the config file and would not be ephemeral, instead surviving upgrades and re-installations. A simple text note without fancy markup would likely suffice. The text would easily compress for config inclusion and hence allowing many hundreds of chars (a thousand per page?) would not seem to be demanding, to my mind at least.
(This time I did remember to search “The future of Electric Eel and Apps”, and elsewhere in the forums, so I hope I am not duplicating effort!)
