Offline uncorrectable sectors and some questions

Hi,
I’m a newbie to Truenas, have been running my small installation for about 1,5 years.

I recently got the error message “Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], 1168 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors”. After googling and following the advice of some threads on this forum, I ran a manual SMART long test on this drive (the newest one in the list). Here the output of smartctl -x /dev/sdc.

Seagate FARM log (GP Log 0xa6) supported [try: -l farm]

I understand that the relevant values here are ID 197 and 198 (but please correct me if I’m wrong). Does this mean that my drive is starting to fail? I was very surprised to get the pending sectors alert because the drive is more or less new (about 10000 hours in use, I bought it new about 2 years ago).

My questions are

  • Is it just bad luck that the drive is failing this early (I expected them to last for about 5 years)? Or could it be that I misconfigured something and the drive is working way more than it should and therefore shows early signs of failing?
  • I run weekly SMART short tests and monthly long tests on every drive (btw. is this a reasonable frequency or should I run them more frequently?). Before my manual smart long test, every smart test completed without any error, as seen in the output. How did Truenas notice that something was bad with my drive if not through smart tests? Sorry, maybe thats a very newbie question, but I thought that the goal of Smart tests was exactly this, diagnosing problems with the drive. Why does it show that every smart test except the last passed?
  • From 0 to 1168 pending sectors seems like a steep increase to me in one month (since running the last smart long test). Is there some way to find out whether this pending sector count increased with time without me noticing or whether it developed in one event or a very short timespan?
  • In the device statistics settings of the smartctl output it says “2734536311 N-- Spindle Motor Power-on Hours”. I don’t understand this output, my other identical drive without errors shows here about the same value as in “power on hours”. What does the N-- flag mean and how can this large a number appear here?

I hope I added every relevant information without writing to much unneccesary stuff :).

Thanks a lot for your answers, I appreciate it tremendously!

I run TrueNAS Scale TrueNAS-SCALE-23.10.2 with an i3 8100, 32GB of RAM and two mirrored Pools (1: 2 mirrored 500GB SSDs, 2: 2 mirrored 4TB HDDs). About 50% of both pools are in use. The disk in question is part of the mirrored HDD pool

First of all, thank you for posting all the data I needed to give you a proper answer. Unfortunately your drive is failing, if it is still under warranty, you need to go that route. The SMART Extended test failure was the immediate criteria for this conclusion.

Now to answer your questions:

This is not your fault. Drives fail which is why the warranty is a critical part of what you are paying for.

Yes, this is reasonable. I looked at that as well and at least you are running them. Many people don’t at all or only run a Short test. My personal preference is a Daily Short test and a Weekly Long test. But that works for my situation. If you have a lot of drives, a Weekly Long test may not be appropriate.

It looks like a piece of the disk coating flaked off. It happens. All of this changed within a 108 hour span. Most of the time I see 10 to 50 counts, yours was quite high which tells me you has a serious problem with that drive.

You should run another Extended/Long test to verify the failure. Maybe there was a power burp but that is really wishful thinking.

I wish I had the answer for you, this value could be in milliseconds or some proprietary formula. I suspect “N” means Normal, but we may never know for certain.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

thank you for the quick reply and the detailed explanations, it means a lot to me :)!

So then I’ll be buying a new drive …

Just one more thing: How does Truenas notice that a drive is failing? I previously supposed by running SMART tests but before running a manual long test I could’t find any error in the SMART logs.

Does Truenas run its own Smart tests or is there some other metric used by the system to check drive health?

Again, thanks a lot for your expertise

(I googled a bit about my question but could’t find anything)
