Offtopic : Goodbye from a still-happy TrueNAS user

Hi guys,

Have been using TrueNAS for years now and it served me very well. Still, for about 2 years now, I started to drift away slowly but surely. Seeing how TrueNAS is now moving to Linux, combined with the need to store data in a VM in my ESXi server without the possibility to passthrough a controller, I started using ZFS on linux myself.

With ESXi gone, I moved to Proxmox. I also replaced my R820 with an FX2S. Storage is now a mix of ZFS managed from Proxmox and vSAN (using Starwind here). As for running application and services, I now do it from a Kubernetes cluster.

I learned a lot about ZFS, storage, best practices and more while running TrueNAS but now, the functions I used to do with TrueNAS will be performed by other technologies because from now on, they will serve me better. Should be turning off my last TrueNAS server in a short time now.

Farewell and I may pass by time to time but will surely not be such an active member anymore.

Hey,

What’s exactly wrong with TrueNAS Scale for you? I am using it in my lab without major issues. I’ve heard that performance on Scale can be worse in some cases.
As for Starwind, I’ve heard that they are planning to add HA support with TrueNAS, which might be useful.
In any case, I think it is better to user whatever suits your lab/environment the most.

I started with TrueNAS when all my servers were at home. But because I was relying more and more on my self-hosted services, I moved my main server to colocation.
Because it is paid per U, I keep everything in a single unit. For that, an actual type 1 hypervisor is required. Ex: I have a cluster of 4 MariaDB servers, an 8 nodes Kubernetes cluster, … I also have a pair of FW in HA that, once again, run much better for a type 1 hypervisor.
With ESXi gone, I moved to Proxmox instead. There is not a significant experience running TrueNAS under that one.
So my need is now virtual storage in a Proxmox cluster instead of local physical storage for ESXi and its VMs.
Should I host a single MariaDB instance, one from TrueNAS could do it. Not so much for a cluster of 4 with 2 Maxscale proxy in front of it.
So that is why TruenNAS, despite being a very good solution, is not the solution that answers my needs best anymore.
