TLDR: While the “power on hours are faked”, the “Spindle Power on Hours” and “Head Flight Hours” are not. The later two you won’t get from reading S.M.A.R.T data but by reading Seagate Field Access Reliability Metrics log (FARM).

Here is an article about the problem:

Hi Sara.

If you look at the files shared you will see I shared a normal SMART log file and then a FARM for the same drives showing the discrepancies.

G

Yep and it is not just Segate. I bought 2 WD drives from an amazon “trusted” vemdor that died within weeks of each other… Goes to the old adage “If it is too good to be true, it probably is”…

@georgelza
What are the spindle hours further down in the output of smartctl -x /dev/sdc ?

Can you please post that output. While I have some Seagate drives, they are fairly old so before this issue came up.

I am adding a FARM check right now to Multi-Report which is ready to be released, glad I thought about adding this check, should save a lot of people some headache.

An aggravating issue then being that WD, HGST and Toshiba do not use FARM so there’s no easy way to check if SMART values have been tampered with.

Caveat emptor…

EDIT: Fixed.

Hmm… seems like OP wrongfully edited it.

It used to say in FARM:
Power on Hours: 2655
Spindle Power on Hours: 515214582799
Head Flight Hours: 515214582788

Fixed now.

For future reference, it’s better to copy-paste the code output into code brackets</>, and if it’s a lot of text, to collapse them between [details] and [/details].

Attachments require downloading and then opening them up on our own computers.

I read an article where the sellers claim they acquired these drives from another party whom they trusted, and so they thought that they were actually selling new or almost new Seagate drives.

Now it’s a matter of who’s lying?

I blame Chia farmers.

Maybe that’s where the acronym “FARM” came from? To take a jab at Chia farmers?

OP here…

Figured piping the command output and posting those files due to size would be preferred… hehehe never win.
Will run the above command when I get home.

I did not edit the attached files.

G

Did you already request a refund? You never know with sellers sometimes.

I took their contents and put them into code blocks and collapsible details, so that no one has to download files to their computer just to read the output. I pasted “sdf” twice". Fixed now.

Spindle time is additional information reported using the farm command which is not reported using basic Smartctl.
Got to know about it today due to errors and the public news about fw modified drives being sold as new.

G

This user was probably bitten by fake/old Seagate drives sold from such a seller.

I think the reason Seagate’s name keeps coming up is because there’s a way for people to check the true hours. It’s very likely that WD drives are part of the mix, but fewer customers are aware of it, and they do not (yet?) have a FARM feature.

Apparently this all started with Exo drives out of Germany. Sold in big batches to crypto miners.
2 scenarios unfolding… drives being sold after fw modified and resealed in new anti static bags.
Second…. Old drives originally sold 2+ yrs ago… sat on selves. Now being sold as new.
Think one of my 4 drives was an old on shelved, and the other 3 was previously used where they reset the smart counters….
They are it seems not able to reset the farm values.
One of my drives the serial number reports invalid on verify.seagate.com

Allie is washing they hands in innocence and not willing to force the seller…

It would be interesting to see the results of the other user’s FARM values and what their serial numbers say about their warranty.

They haven’t replied in a while, though.

So what I am hearing here: To be safe “Don’t buy Seagate drives” and if you do immediately check the FARM status to return scam drives. And further if you can’t stand the failure buy from reputable vendors and check with the manufacture on the warranty status of the drive. Also if it seems to be to good a price to believe it could be an indication of a scam drive.

There’s nothing wrong with buying Seagate drives from reputable sellers. It’s not Seagate’s fault that dubious people are reselling their drives. They have a brand reputation to protect, and so they are just as invested in this as are their customers.

This is good practice going forward, even from sellers you trust.
