Thanks for posting. Unfortunately I don’t see anything that might be useful, looks like to prove the drive was falsified is to use the FARM data. That is too bad. I’d like another way to identify a drive that is not a Seagate drive. Maybe the drive manufacturers will make a firmware change to do what Seagate is doing. It would be nice but they will need to justify the cost. It is all about money.

I don’t believe that’s possible, since as far as I know, an HDD doesn’t retain actual dates in its SMART data.
Hours powered on or spinning is all they can provide.

It does not exist. I create everything in a RAM drive (/tmp) on your system, then after I send the email I delete the files. If you reboot the system and I left a file, is goes away due to it being in a temporary RAM drive.
I do retain the Drive Selftest output in the folder called “DS_Logs” and you should have up to 31 of these, one for each day of the month. For example: the file that starts with “1” is the first of the month. The following first of the month the file will be replaced with a new one. This helps to prove if a drive was sent and accepted the SMART selftest command.
If you would like a copy, other than the typical output, try to run the script by appending the switch -dump
to the command. This will send you a copy of the troubleshooting attachments I use, but only to you. To send to me you need to add email to the end of that and then I will see it too.

hopefully was a refurbished drive since the FARM hours are not even a close match (78.41 days). If it was not refurbished then I don’t know why the discrepancy.

Thanks for sharing your findings! It’s really concerning to see these discrepancies with the drives. I totally agree—keeping track of HDD serial numbers and when they were first added to TrueNAS would be super helpful.
Let’s hope more manufacturers catch up with Seagate’s FARM feature soon.

FARM is already broken.
Newer scammers are also tampering FARM and not only SMART.

That makes sense and I could see the writing on the wall. Guess I need to check more values between SMART and FARM to “try” and see if they missed matching up the numbers, but I suspect that will be corrected and all the FARM data will look legitimate in the coming days/months.

Normally we assume FARM values are higher than smartctl…
I’de suggest also checking the opposite, have a drive where the FARM values / course is less than smartctl.
What makes me think the drive has been tampered with is the restart/power cycle count.
As a brand new drive, doubt i have restarted it 60+ times in the last 24 hours.

Just keep the emails flowing and assume you are stuck with it, this way if a refund occurs, you will be happy vice angry this happened in the first place.
I bought an NVMe drive that was fake (I strongly suspected it from the beginning). The seller on AliExpress tried everything to have me keep the fake unit, they offered to send me another one, offered to send me a free heatsink, eventually AliExpress took it into their own hands and forced the refund to happen. It took a few weeks but it was done. I did have to send back the NVMe drive and they paid for the postage, and I know it was not worth the postage to send back to China, after all, it was fake.
So make sure you don’t give up. AliExpress is probably not the bad guy here, just a non-vetted third party seller. And I hope you are able to get some restitution.

I don’t even mind too much getting a used drive, as long as it still has a 5y warranty.
Makes me wonder, do sellers write down the serial before shipping drives?
Because how else do they know if really the Seagate drive with serial number X I bought 4y ago failed and not the Seagate drive with serial number Y I bought 6y ago?
Sometimes you will see the serial number on the invoice, sometimes not.
As far as I am aware, they don’t care. The manufacturer warranties the drive from date of manufacture, not sell, however you can still push if you have a receipt and it shows that you purchased a specific model or serial number. For this reason you may find that a drive you purchase may have 5.5 years of warranty for example, to offset the time sitting in a warehouse. Not sure how true this is but it is what I have heard, and I have seen a 3 year drive have over 3 years left when I checked it.
