Please Wait installing apps

Hi All, so I’m not quite sure what I’ve done but I seem to have broken something along the way and cant get back, I had everything working at one point yesterday,

Specs if it helps:
i5-14500
Asus W680-Ace IPMI
32 GB ECC ram (on the QVL list)
64gb Optane - Boot Drive
1TB NVME - SN850x

Note the last of any drives atm, I’ve just put it together and intend on getting drives soon*

What I have done so far is install the latest version of Truenas Scale - 24.10.0.2, on my 64GB drive
I created a VDEV out of the 1tb drive, just a single drive as I wanted to get some familiarity with the OS

After I added the Drive I went to Apps, selected this pool and installed Portainer, All going well so far, I went to Portainer WebUI and installed 2 more Apps through it, nothing major, just looking to see how it went, all this worked fine

Then I think I was in network setting a static IP address or so, I’m not fully certain but either way I then lost my Apps, going to apps wouldn’t show Portainer (at this stage I could still access the WebUI but it wasnt listed under Applications), I tried to undo whatever changes I made but was getting nowhere, decided I had nothing to lose I would just start fresh

So I did a clean install of Truenas and attempted to import the NVME with the apps on, didnt get anywhere with this

So I did another clean OS install but this time I also wiped and started fresh by adding the NVME again as a new VDEV and not importing it, however I cant seem to install any Apps anymore,

If I go to Apps - Configuration - Select Pool - Choose the New NVME pool, then go to Discover Apps - Find Portainer - Click Install - it gets stuck on “Please Wait” I’ve yet to make it past this stage today even after a few Clean OS installs, which I was certain would cleaned the slate from whatever changes I made yesterday to break the apps in the first place,

I am aware this isnt alot to go on but I would appreciate any help in getting things back up and running,

Many thanks in advance - Mark.

stuck with a similar situation where i cant get apps to install in to a main pool but they install in to my backup pool and they run ok.
the issue seems to be when the web app is trying to download the images from the internet and it gets stuck at 60%.

So I managed to get it back working again, I did 2 things different this time so im not certain which pme caused my issue,

No 1 - restored bios to factory defaults
No 2 - took out the NVME that I was using for Apps, installed it in a windows machine, and wiped it here, up until now I had let truenas wipe the data on it everytime I tried to add it as a new pool

Doing the above and I could install portainer 1st try.

haveing a very similar issue here, seems to dowload, gets stuck at 60% and then get error

FAILED [EFAULT] Failed ‘up’ action for ‘immich’ app, please check /var/log/app_lifecycle.log for more details

correct i get the same.

I dont think it’s going to be the best solution for everyone, I am lucky that Ive only just assembled the system so a clean install doesnt have any impact other than time, but clean install (after wiping the apps drive on a separate system) worked wonders.

I will note that the replies here mention that it gets stuck at 60% I didnt get to check at what % my issue was getting stuck at, I didnt get past the initial “please wait” box that pops up right after you click install.

The progress bar for installing apps does not track each individual process. 60% is the point where it begins checking out images and starting them, so it will stay at 60% for as long as it takes to do all those processes (or until the deployment fails).

I’m experiencing the same thing that you were, except I could never get an app to install. I too went the Portainer route, but mine went to the infinite “Please Wait” stage. Also did a clean install after this, and I’m still getting the same problem.

I too have the same motherboard as you, just 13500 for the cpu. Just got all my parts last week.

For the bios, what firmware were you on? I’ve updated mine to the latest before installing TrueNAS.
Since, we have the same board, did you also have the IPMI installed and firmware updated before installing TrueNAS?

Regarding the NVME drive, did you also do another clean install of TrueNAS after the windows wipe?

Sorry for all the questions, but just trying understand what I might need to do. Appreciate any info you can provide!

Dont worry about all the questions I totally understand,

BIOS, just checked and im on 4001, I updated mine to the latest too but 4001 was the latest and i havnt updated to 4101 just yet, the bios page says to update to the latest ME too, i put windows on a spare drive to instal ME before I updated the bios on the off chance it made any difference.

For the 1st install I didnt have the IPMI card installed, but ive had a few reinstals and have had the IPMI card in for them, I did have the latest firmware, as above - installing windows and updates was the 1st thing I did

Yes after i wiped the drive in window’s I did a fresh install, from memory I put the nvme to make sure the drive was wiped and did a fresh installation of Truenas, I still had the usb drive ready to do a fresh install

I hope aome of this can be of use

That was a big help, thanks!

I followed what you did and I got my system up and running once again. I now have portainer up and running!

I’m going to post my step here in case anyone else has this problem.

Created usb for windows to update to the latest ME
Install windows 10 on the 128gb NVME drive (which was my TrueNAS boot drive)
Update ME from Asus site for the W680 Ace

  • Did the chipset update first: 2407.6.1.0 - 2024/10/16
  • Then updated using the MeUpdateTool: 16.1.32.2473 - 2024/10/30
  • BIOS is currently at 4001, didn’t update it
Wipe all the drives, includes ssd 1tb (for apps), 20tb x2 (mirror)
  • Used windows
  • Used diskpart to clean each drive

Remove the 128gb nas drive, (what I have windows installed on)
Place it in my normal desktop
Wiped it with windows

  • Cleaned with diskpart
    Install drive back into nas
    Rest bios to defaults
Fresh install of Truenas with a new usb stick (reuse the windows usb one)
  • Used a 2 gig one the first time to install, this time used a 64 gig one

Setup up a static IP once in TN

  • Gateway
  • DNS
    Created a user first
Created a pool of just the NVME drive
  • Before I was creating a mirror pool of my HDDs first
Picked a random app (dashy) to install
Asked to create a pool, picked the NVME one
    dashy installed

Tried portainer and it worked!

Oh thats great to hear! Glad you got it all up and working, quite the indepth write that should help anyone having the same issue!
