I made another modification last week, 3D printed an air duct to ensure the NVMe modules definitely have forced airflow (I should not have purchased a perforated case, but it looks so damn nice). The NVMe’s were being cooled fine but it was something I could build and it looks like it could have been a factory option, and I am 100% certain they are being very well cooled. I should have taken a few photos. Maybe I will update that build post.

I am using an asm166 passed through on a virtualized scale under proxmox for the last 8 months.

I have 3 wd red plus hooked to it and works without any problems.

I did tried some old hgst enterprise drives at some point but I was getting smart errors again and again. It couldn’t communicate properly to get the smart data from the drives and scale was screaming that my drives were failing. Switched to wd reds and problem solved.

I also have an lsi hba 9500-8i on another system which works fine as well and supports lower power states.

ok, considering the original contraint was the money, idea with recreating 3x12tb storage with nvmes seemed ridiculous to me. But I might didn’t get the joke, all good :slight_smile:

The original constraint was ā€œlow powerā€. SSDs are very worth considering over spinners for that, especially SATA SSDs (U.2 NVMe can have quite high idle power; M.2 use less power but are limited in capacity.)
3*12 TB (raidz1) would be 24 TB raw capacity, ca. 20 TB usable).
You can achieve that with 7-8 * 3.84 TB SSDs or 4 * 7.68 TB SSDs in raidz1. Refurbished data centre SSDs of these capacities will be more expensive than HDDs, but not necessarily out of financial reach.

The new Phison controller, likely not available to consumers for a while, runs at PCIE5 speeds and matched with some new memory is touted to not require a heatsink. It can be placed inside a laptop and function fine. I didn’t catch the power draw but it must be low. Now I want one too.

Just curious, how are you fitting 3x HDDs in this tiny machine? Unless the drives are running exterior to the chassis and gets a separate PSU for them.

I just built a Aoostar WTR Pro (Ryzen 5825u) with proxmox and TrueNAS as a VM. It idles at 8w with 2x memory sticks and 2x NVME, before any HDDs are in.

This barebone is smaller than the Lenovo m920q, has more computing power, lower power draw, and the onboard SATA controller can be passed through to TrueNAS VM. Just something to consider.
