Re: CLOSED: TrueNAS SCALE 24.10.0 is Now Available!

Continuing the discussion from TrueNAS SCALE 24.10.0 is Now Available!:

Is this really true? Because if it is true that it was last updated BEFORE the release of 24.10.0, how come this page explicitly refers to Testers using a non-release and how come the page’s metadata says it was last updated at “2024-10-31T12:52:26-07:00” several days after this version was announced:

I would also add that whilst I understand that you might want to close off this original discussion, doing so immediately after you post what appears to be an untruth gives the appearance that you were worried about being called out about this and / or wanted to stifle debate that is partially critical of iX’s communications.

This is another mis-direction:

  1. This was quite obviously not true at the time you were making general announcements suggesting to everyone they should upgrade to 24.10.0.
  2. There is a growing list of posts on this forum from users whose systems have been partially broken by this upgrade - it’s not just about formally logged bugs.
  3. I am NOT painting this as any sort of regression in the general quality of Scale which IMO remains high, and should IMO absolutely be recommended to NEW General-classification users. What I am pointing out is:
    • that the risk of app migration failures for iX apps, and the lack of app migration for TrueChart or bespoke apps and a sudden-death cut-over of apps (rather than parallel running) means that additional care and preparation needs to be taken before upgrading; and
    • iX has since announcement simultaneously been marketing this version as ready for anyone to upgrade to, whilst failing to flag up the risks or need for preparatory action in these announcements and showing on a single somewhat unknown Software Status page that this version is only suitable for Testers.

No - no one is “forcing” an upgrade, but iX (and indeed @kris personally - see yesterdays T3 podcast) absolutely is enthusiastically encouraging even the most risk-averse and non-technical user to migrate by failing to given even the slightest warnings about the potential issues they might face in these announcements.

Sigh, I guess I could spell it out more for you, but your augmentative nature sure doesn’t help motivate much.

New releases land on the chart automatically in the Tester column. (That’s what you are seeing now) We meet internally every 2 weeks or so to approve when they move up the chart into higher states. I expect we will move it to the General status at that next meeting, and the chart will update shortly after.

Because I’m watching the internal numbers / issue counts, I can say with confidence that this release is clearly already “general” status at this point, and happily did so on the podcast yesterday. The numbers have been phenomenal all around. For comparison, CORE in its heyday would take 3-4 months to get these kinds of usage numbers, and with FAR higher counts of open issues.

Users are always encouraged to read the release notes, and make a CHOICE (again, nobody forced anything) on when they are ready to upgrade.

Hopefully that clears things up. Suggest you find a new axe to grind somewhere
