I’m looking for recommendations for a server motherboard w/ 10 Gb that people have used and works for TrueNas Scale.
It’s generally more economical to add 10 GbE using an add-in card, be it Intel, Chelsio, or Solarflare. But with that said, my SuperMicro X11DPH-T works very well.
I have tried adding an add-in 10Gb card with about 4 types and had no luck with trueNas Core recognition them so I’m looking at just replacing my board to a new board with built-in10 Gb.
Any other recommendation on boards with 10Gb to work with TrueNas? If there are non server boards that are known to work please let me know as well anyone.
Recommended cards for CORE (and SCALE, for that matter) have been well-documented for many years (they’re the ones I mentioned), and they Just Work™ with both systems. SCALE’s compatibility is broader, but that still doesn’t make a Marvell or Aquantia card a good idea.
But there are lots of good boards with 10 GbE onboard. If you could define your requirements a bit (“works for TrueNAS SCALE” really doesn’t tell us much about your needs), we might be able to give better advice.
My A2SDi-H-TF works well.
Wouldn’t want to run massive numbers of containers / apps on it as its not a high power CPU
Not overly cheap though
Currently I have 8-4Tb drives with a LSi-9300-8i running 1 Gb Nic card. I want to upgrade to 10Gb speeds therefore looking for recommendations for a board with 10Gb onboard because I could not find a 10Gb NIC card recognized with my current setup on True Nas Core.
If you’re now using (or changing to) SCALE, why does it matter what worked (or not) with CORE?
I mean, if you want a new motherboard, go ahead; people have upgraded for worse reasons (I upgraded to my current mobo for a better IPMI controller, which might well qualify as a “worse reason”). But, again, good recommendations for 10G NICs haven’t changed much since this was published over seven years ago:
…which, as I said, come down to Chelsio, Intel, and/or Solarflare.
But my board has onboard 10 GbE which works well (though I’m not using it; I’m using a SFP±based Chelsio NIC instead); Nugent’s reported that his works well also. I’d venture to say that any server board from Asrock or Supermicro with onboard Intel 10 GbE is highly likely to be a good choice.
Recently picked up a used Asrock Rack E3C246D4U2-2T with a Xeon E-2174G and 64GB of RAM for $300. Added another 64GB of RAM for around $200 and it’s working great. Onboard dual 10GbaseT via Intel X550 with a cheap 10GB/2.5GB switch between the server and desktop and I couldn’t be happier.
