I am relatively new to Truenas.
I have had a Plex server running but am looking for help in remote access to the Truenas GUI for checking systems and other IT stuff I should be doing more often.
I have searched both old and new community search’s and my head is spinning with the posts.
I tried OpenVpn but the version is not compatible with 13.0
I tried wire guard but the settings in the post are not showing in the upgraded Truenas.
Currently running TrueNAS-13.0-U6.1
I have a Dell File server I converted to hold a MSI motherboard, 2 8tb, 2 4tb, 2 2tb drives. For different media/storage setups.
I have a Xfinity modem/router combo so I can set Port forwarding up.
Any help in getting something better setup for remote, current is Teamviewer into a old AIO sitting next to it, when off network.
You should set the VPN there.
For what Is my experience, don’t use the built in open VPN, every guide i follow for a basic setup was inconsistent.
Despite i was able to follow the resource for install Wireguard… Im still using it. I remember too that some point was mismatching but Is still viable to follow, maybe we can help you through the process.
Plex offer a basic remote access, have tou try It?
I guess the real question is, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? If it’s “view your Plex/Emby media remotely,” as @oxyde says, both of those apps include that feature. If it’s remote access to your files, Nextcloud may be your answer. But if you want or need to remotely control your NAS when you’re away, a VPN is really the only way to go, and if possible it should be set up on your router. And apparently (though somewhat surprisingly to me) that is possible with the router Comcast/Xfinity provides.
I will relook at the wireguard set up tonight and see which setting was throwing me off.
Plex does work off network. I am hoping to remote to the Truenas system like I do when on network.
My hope or plan is to be able to access the Truenas webgui like I do on network.
To be able to check the system, set up pools, or do reports remotely during down time at work. Currently, when at work, I have to TeamViewer into a computer sitting next to it to be able to access the webgui. Or wait till I get home and use my own computer to access it.
Same as me, Wireguard work really well for that. Honestly Plex streaming Is the only thing i don’t even try by VPN but should work as well.
But first look at @Davvo links because you have that juicy option on your router
Unfortunately that won’t work.
My modem/router is a Xfinity Gateway. And they don’t support VPN server.
At least per the other comments. “We don’t provide technical support for VPN setup/connections, so in order to connect successfully, we strongly suggest contacting your VPN provider for further configuration details”
