Replace old disk with larger one

im sure this is explained somewhere but i can find an answer. I have one Pool on one 8TB physical spinning disk. O\S is on a seperate SSD.

I want to install a new larger HDD around 12TB and move the pool onto the new disk retaining all the same naming etc.

After that I’ll add an extra 12TB and mirror.

How do i do the initial migration of the old smaller drive onto the new one keeping everything intact?

Install the new disk, replace the old disk with the new disk using the GUI, remove the old disk. The manual explains disk replacement.

I think the OP meant to convert a single drive to mirror on the fly.

That’s not what OP said:

Now, it’d be equally possible to do as you suggest–add the 12 TB disk as a mirror of the existing one, then replace the existing 8 TB disk with another 12 TB disk–but that wasn’t the question.

Thanks for the input. Re the suggestion to add new drive and mirror wouldn’t I loose that extra capacity which defeats the purpose or can you expand later? Sorry I’m new.

The mirror would have the capacity of its smallest disk.

So, once you remove the smallest disk, the capacity would increase. Whether you remove it by replacing with a larger disk, or just straight removing it sometime after adding a larger disk

You have a choice to make, you can either add the 12TB as a mirror to your existing disk, or you can replace the existing disk with the 12TB.

adding one, then removing the other, is what replace does.

I documented the process with pictures here:
