Replacing disk with hardware disk copy

I have a RAIDZ1 array. If I have a disk which only shows smart errors and has no data errors and I want to replace it with a new disk, can I replace and detach the disk, take it out, use a hard disk hardware replicator to copy the entire disk image and then replace the new disk and wait for it to resilver.

Presumably this will be MUCH faster than resilvering with a blank disk due to the data already being there and the hardware disk copying process being completely sequential.

What do you think?

Do you have a spare disk port? You can do an in place replacement of the ‘failing’ disk with the new one and remove the old one once completed.

I don’t know if the disk replicated will be recognized by ZFS and TrueNAS. They usually go by serial number and that would change
