Hi guys, I have TrueNAS Mini 3.0 XL+, running Scale TrueNAS-24.04.2.
I have 8 HDDs of 6TB in RaidZ2 and I’m trying to upgrade them to 8 HDDs of 22TB.
I know I need to do them 1 by 1 in order not to lose my data.
I selected the 1st HDD and set it to offline, then took it out, but after inserting the new HDD (22TB), the NAS doesn’t see it (there is nothing in the Replace list).
I also tried rebooting the NAS.
I found a list of compatible HDDs in https://www.truenas.com/truenas-mini/
My HDD is not listed there, so I guess it’s not compatible…
I’ll need to exchange them to something else (probably to 18TB WD Red Pro - WD181KFGX).
I wish I saw this list before I purchased the 22TB HDDs
This is not a logically correct conclusion. Or rather it is IMO a misnomer by iX to call it a compatibility list. IMO what this list is really saying is that this is the list of drives that iX has formally evaluated (and perhaps formally tested) on the Mini and that they therefore can support from a hardware warranty perspective and from a software support perspective.
This does NOT mean that all other drives are NOT compatible i.e. won’t work at all in the Mini, just that you will have to find our for yourself. (But avoid SMR disks at all costs.)
(So for SSDs, I suspect that Samsung and Crucial are going to be a bit miffed to find out that their SSDs won’t work in a Mini despite both the Mini and their SSDs meeting the SATA standards. Ditto for Toshiba for HDDs and indeed Seagate for its Ironwolf Pro and EVO ranges.)
I decided to go with a sure thing (even though is 18TB and not 22TB).
I went with the Western Digital 18TB WD Red Pro NAS (WD181KFGX).
I replaced 2 already, no issues, I need to replace 6 more before I can expand my raid.
