Resizing my NAS

Hi,
I have a question for which I believe I know the answer for… but you never know.

I currently have a TrueNAS core setup with 8 drives in a RaidZ2 configuration.

I just acquired larger drives and would love to move from 8 drives down to 4 drives in a different configuration.

What would be the less traumatic way to perform this move?

Would it be to copy the data elsewhere and then back to the new pool via ZFS replication or is there something else which could be done?

Thanks,

Any chance you can fit an HBA into the system & replicate? At least that way would save you the step of copying off the system.

If not, any chance you got a second system that you can temporarily install TrueNAS on that can fit either 8 or 4 drives? Then with two systems, congratz you have a backup of you data :stuck_out_tongue: Or you can replicate from one to the other & then remove the temporary TrueNAS install.

The only way to perform the move is to replicate from one pool to another.
There’s no issue of reusing drives from one pool to another. This is just a matter of attaching all drives, even temporarily.
A single system, with a temporary HBA. Or two systems and either fast NICs or some patience.

Thank you, didn’t think about the HBA route, I have some at home, just need to figure out power to these new drives
As it’s a replication the pool would then have the same POOL name which would then be key for shares and what not.
