Setting up a HP Microserver Gen8

Hi all,

I have just got myself a Gen8 too and would like to set this up running TrueNAS alongside my perfectly functioning Gen7 that also has TrueNAS running.

I’d like to boot from SSD but would rather not go down the GRUB/USB route if possible.

I’ll be installing an PCIE LSI HBA (IT MODE) to drive the 4 bays with SAS drives as my Pool & was thinking that I could run another cable from the mobo SAS port to the SSD.

Would this solve the issue of the flaky boot problems with these Gen8s?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Your proposed config should work just fine: just remember that on the mobo SATA ports (they’re not SAS) only ports 1 and 2 run at 6gb/s, ports 3 and 4 only run at 3gb/s.

Get a SATA spider cable and an adapter to take power from the 4 pin molex to SATA to power those drives. You’ll find that a pair of 2.5" drives fit quite neatly in the space at the top of the case where the ODD should go.
