Slow file transfer, but not always

I am transferring large files (~10 gb or more) from my windows 11 pc to a truenas scale SMB share, and I usually hit transfer speeds of 90 MB/s, but sometimes it falls down to 1 MB/s. The truenas UI is also very slow/unresponsive. When I reboot the server transfer is fast again for a few days, why does this happen?

Having SMR disks is a big cause of slow downs. Also what exact hardware? Mobo, cpu, NIC? Also, how are you transferring the data? Copy / paste or robocopy.

NAS system specs:
Intel® Core i5-6400
ASUS H170 PRO GAMING
Kingston HyperX Fury Black 4x4GB DDR4-2400
Dell PERC H310 8-Port 6Gb/s SAS Adapter flashed to IT mode
Intel I219V NIC 1Gbps

I am copying with copy/paste.

Make sure all bios etc is up to date. You’ve got an intel NIC so you’re good there. Try robocopy in command prompt in windows

robocopy < source > < destination > /s

e.g. robocopy c:\myfiles d:\truenas /s

Avoid the /z switch as it slows things down massively in my experience.

other than that my bet is the mix of SMR disks in your pool causing slow downs, but others may chime in and have alternative ideas.

It is easy to jump on there being one or more SMR disks as being the cause - and indeed there are genuine reasons that SMR drives cause slow writes when you are trying to write a lot of data, and the worst time to find this out is when you need to resilver because any resilver will take an excessively long time and thus it is pretty well understood that SMR drives are entirely and absolutely unsuitable for use in redundant ZFS vDevs .

Green drives are often unsuitable in other ways i.e. they are not designed to report errors promptly but rather to keep trying for excessive time when an error occurs - and this makes them better for non-redundant desktop drives, but unsuitable for redundant vDevs where an early error is preferable so that ZFS can use the redundancy to present valid data quickly.

However leaving the types of disk aside, there have been several threads on here recently about poor performance, and disk performance is often not the (only) reason for poor performance (e.g. possibly also due to poor choice of ZFS dataset record size, forcing or triggering synchronous writes, single write threads, encryption and / or compression slowing things down, not understanding the network bottlenecks etc.)

But the bottom line is that if you are running ZFS i.e. TrueNAS and are worried at all about performance then you need better drives - and ditto if you are worried about your data being lost.

Alright, I’ll look for CMR drives when these fail, in a couple of years

It does still baffle me that the system grinds to a halt, and needs a reboot to respond again. I don’t really need performance, I’m just running a plex server😅
SMB share is not encrypted, didn’t touch the default settings.

I ran iperf:

This is after the reboot, and everything will be fine for a couple of days. I’ll get back when it happens again

Ruled out bad cables?

So you are going to wait until you risk losing all your data before you do something?

The first time you have a drive fail, the resilver will take forever and a day - all whilst stressing all the rest of your old drives. The likelihood of a 2nd drive failing during the resilver is therefore significant.

This might be fixed by setting a suitable TLER vallue.

But the pool has several flaws.
sda Barracuda CMR 2 TB — OK
sdb Barracuda Green 2 TB — check TLER (and other drives as well)
sdc Barracuda SMR 2 TB — should be replaced as soon as possible
sdd Barracuda Green 2 TB — 10.5k reallocated sectors, this drive is degrading, and this is another possible cause of slowdowns; replace immediately, RMA if possible

Is it supported by Barracuda Greens?

I don’t know if TLER can be set on these drives, but OP can try.

Where do you see C and D need to be replaced?

Seagate FARM log (GP Log 0xa6) supported [try: -l farm]

sdc is SMR. That alone is a ground to want to replace it.
You have two problematic drives in a raidz1, one of which will cause very slow resilvers.

Make sure you have good backups, especially if you insist on waiting for the first actual failure to do something about iit.

Alright, SDD is replaced, now going to look for a CMR disk. Thanks for the advice!
